AfterHours Sermon

Celebrating God in the world in 2012:

Feb 20th: Blake Street Tavern @ 6pm

Feb 27th: The Irish Snug @ 6pm

Beer/God/PB&J...

AfterHours Denver: Redefining Happy Hour...and church.

Theology Pub:

Every Monday we aren't gathering together to celebrate God in the world we are at The Irish Snug downstairs, 6:45pm. Food, Drink and God Talk...with moments of raucous laughter thrown in. We think & drink, pour & ponder God and things that are bigger than we are.

Book Club...with Spirit(s):

December's book club went great, but to be honest, it is hard enough for me to find time to read about God...AND IT'S MY JOB. I can't IMAGINE how hard it is for YOU to find the time. So, here is what we are going to do: I'm going to do the reading, invite you to do it if you want, and then we'll get together and talk about the topic. No prep, no fuss no muss, just me giving a book report with you throwing in your two cents whenever you want. We will also throw in food and drink some place around town.

Not sure what the next book will be, but keep checking back here and I'll keep you in the loop.

What's Going On....

Our last service at the Irish Snug on Jan 30th was, in a word, awesome. We had nearly 70 people come to celebrate God in the world. There was no sermon. Instead I interviewed one of our friends from the park who had just gotten off the street. he told us about how he got on the street, how he got off the street and how Afterhours has played a part in his life. Very cool time spent with God and each other.

Our next service will be at Blake Street Tavern at 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 20th
. Huge room, cool neighborhood,  and should be a awesome place to spend time with God. We will be back at the Irish Snug at 6pm on Feb. 27th. We are actually  "Under the Snug" in their downstairs area. We are now LITERALLY an underground church! The Snug is at 1201 E Colfax Ave in downtown Denver, about 1/2 mile east of the Capital. If you ever get confused on the dates, just remember that we will be at the Irish Snug THE LAST MONDAY OF EVERY MONTH.

As you can see we are adding locations. We were at The Uptown Tavern (538 E. 17th Ave. Denver) earlier in Jan. and it was awesome. This had the same DNA as AfterHours Denver @ the Snug but had a bit of a different vibe. Come join around downtown as we  once again do God in yet another different way!

Blake Street Tavern (2301 Blake Street, Denver) will begin Feb. 20th at 6pm! We will be in the Tailgate room. Should be very cool. Our own sound system, our own bar and plenty of space. Again, same DNA as at our other locations, but the energy will different from our other two locations. Come check it out.

We have also worked out a deal with, what I consider one of the coolest bars in the City: Thin Man on 17th. Eric was awesome when we talked and said, "My bar is your church man." How cool is that? We are still looking for a date but keep checking back here for updates.

We are now in Civic Center Park helping our friends without homes SIX times a week! We are also now in the park 3 out of 4 Sat! We join the crew from St. Andrew on Sunday, Fusion provides the food for Monday, we lead the show on Tues, Applied Control Equipment is our corporate partner in feeding the homeless on Wed., St. Paul UMC on Thurs and Peniel (out of University Park UMC) takes the lead on Friday. You will see Afterhour Denver folk there all six days, always at noon. Come on down any time. We're a friendly bunch and not creepy!  We are at 14th and Broadway giving out food, water, socks, communion and just hanging out and making friends.

Wow! It's been a wild ride. We started three years ago with me going down to the park once a week and handing out a few dozen sandwiches to the homeless. We are now in Civic Center Park six times a week and handing out almost 400 lunches a week! In the next few months we will be closing in on having handed out 20,000 lunches to some great men, women and children. And I gotta say we have had a pretty good time doin it. These friends of ours without homes teach US about gratitude!

What an amazing community this has turned into in the last few years. We have gone from a ministry of a suburban church to a standalone faith community...and are now in multiple location! AfterHours is a weird bird, no doubt about it, but I think there are a lot of people out there that like weird birds and still want to connect to God. I can't help but think there are people that want to wrestle with trying to figure out life/God/themselves but traditional church just ain't cutting it for them. Hope we help fill that void in the coming years. Who knows what the future will bring, but I sure am thankful for the chance to serve/love/laugh with all of you this way, this year. Here's to more love, more laughs, & less judgment in the coming year...and beyond!

Every time we gather together at AfterHours we take time to do an act of service during the service. “Serving in the service.” We do this as our Call to Worship because we believe that acts of service are “prayers with feet (and hands)” and we can think of no better way to honor God.

Between making lunches for the homeless, gathering sleeping bags that we pass out to the local non-profit agencies (Urban Peak, Broadway Assistance Center, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless) and doing food drives for the local food banks, Afterhours Denver believes that when we help the "least of these"...our hurting brothers and sister, it makes God smile. (We also believe, well, it's just the right thing to do!)

AfterHours is reaching outside the walls of the church…the way it should be.

Thanks to all those who have been making the lunches over the past few months and years. We have fed thousands of hungry people in the past few years. AfterHours Denver folks are making a difference in the world!

In the past several years those attending AfterHours have donated hundred's of jars of peanut butter for lunches in the park and hundreds and hundreds of boxes of cereal and pasta to Denver Urban Ministries...

And...   For the last three years AfterHours has joined with The Foundation @ University of Denver, Peniel worship out of University Park UMC, Fusion worship out of St. Luke's UMC, St. Paul's UMC and St. Andrew UMC outreach to offer communion and feed the homeless in Civic Center park...now six times a week! AND MORE churches, groups and corportations are getting ready to join in. We are helping change the way church looks in the world, and it is AWESOME!

"God is doing AMAZING things thru the people
who have been coming to AfterHours.
You could be one of them! Hope to see you soon!"

Lastly, people have been asking me how they can donate. (THANK YOU!). You can click the button on the home page that says. "I dig what you are doing!" or you can go old school and just drop it in the mail. We are asking people to just make their donations out to: AFTERHOURS DENVER.
